What Is Grounding and Why It’s Essential for Your Mind, Body & Spirit
I’d love to share a little insight into the power of grounding, what it is, why it’s so important, and how it actually changes our biology and emotional state. Understanding this can make our practice even more meaningful and powerful.
So, What Is Grounding?
Grounding, also called earthing—is the practice of reconnecting your body and energy system with the Earth’s natural electrical charge.
Now, while it might sound like a “nice to have,” it actually has a profound biological effect. Grounding can shift your physical, emotional, and energetic state in a matter of minutes.
We can ground ourselves physically by walking barefoot on grass, soil, or sand or energetically through meditation, breathwork, and visualization. And yes, both methods are powerful and scientifically supported.
🔬 Let’s Talk Science: How Grounding Works
So here’s the cool (and slightly nerdy) part...
We as humans build up positive electrical charges, mostly due to free radical exposure from things like:
Technology and EMFs
Stress and emotional overload
Pollution and poor diet
Our bodies, although neutral overall, can carry localised charges that affect cellular function—especially through ion exchange involving minerals like potassium, calcium, and magnesium.
Here’s the good news:
The Earth carries a natural negative charge, and when we connect to it say, by walking barefoot or lying on the grass, we absorb free electrons that act like antioxidants. These neutralise free radicals, reduce inflammation, and help restore balance.
It’s kind of like plugging yourself back into nature’s battery.
In fact, I always remember my mum warning me not to buy a house under power lines because of the high EMFs and the studies linking them to poor health. She wasn’t wrong—our environment matters!
Research That Backs It Up
Studies have shown that grounding can lead to:
Improved blood flow and reduced inflammation (Journal of Environmental and Public Health, 2012)
Better sleep, reduced pain, and lower cortisol levels (Chevalier, 2015)
A shift in the nervous system from fight-or-flight to rest-and-digest
Fun fact: After just 30 minutes of grounding, people often show measurable drops in blood pressure and a more relaxed parasympathetic nervous system state. That’s biology, not woo-woo.
Why Grounding Is So Important in Meditation
Now let’s tie it into your inner work.
When you meditate without grounding, it’s easy to feel spacey, disconnected, or overwhelmed—especially after energy healing or emotional release.
Grounding in meditation helps you:
Stay anchored in the present
Calm your nervous system
Deepen your access to brainwave states like theta
Prevent post-meditation burnout or emotional instability
Feel safe enough to open up and receive
The more grounded you are, the more your subconscious mind feels safe—and that’s when true healing begins.
How to Ground Yourself: Practical Tools You Can Use
Grounding doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, it’s beautifully simple.
Physical Grounding:
Walk barefoot on grass, sand, or soil for 10–20 minutes
Lie down directly on the Earth and breathe
Use grounding mats at home (they plug into an outlet to simulate Earth contact)
Or… hug a tree! (Yes, really. And don’t worry about the neighbours 😄)
Side note: I miss seeing kids climbing trees! I got stuck in an apple tree once… but that’s a story for another time.
Energetic Grounding:
Visualise roots growing from your feet deep into the Earth
Focus on long, slow exhales—this grounds your nervous system
Place your hand on your heart and say:
“I am safe. I am grounded.”
This is a simple practice you can use anywhere. Combine it with breath and visualisation, and it’s magic.
Supportive Grounding Tools
Some extra helpers you might love:
Essential Oils: Frankincense, vetiver, and cedarwood (be sure they’re 100% pure—my aromatherapy practitioner sources hers from a brilliant Swiss company with no additives)
Root Veggies: Carrots, beetroot, sweet potato—especially after energy healing
Crystals: Hematite, smoky quartz, black tourmaline (carry them, wear them, or place them nearby)
Want to Dig Deeper?
Here are a few studies you can look into:
Chevalier et al. (2012) – Found that grounding reduced blood viscosity (important for heart health)
Gaétan Chevalier (2015) – A pilot study showing improved cortisol and stress regulation
Oschman, Chevalier & Sinatra (2015) – Called grounding a “missing link in health” in their review of physiological effects
In Summary
Grounding isn’t just spiritual—it’s scientific.
It aligns your body with the Earth, regulates your nervous system, reduces stress, and reconnects you with your inner stillness. When we ground before meditation, we create a rooted foundation for everything else to unfold—emotionally, energetically, and spiritually.
So as we move into meditation shortly, see if you can notice what it feels like to truly connect. To feel safe, supported, and present.
From that grounded space… anything is possible.
